A Different PVC Needle Wheel Skimmer

Here's the DIY Page:
DIY Needle Wheel Skimmer

The pic above is a bit off. I show a 1/4" OD air line on the venturi. I now use 1/4" ID hose and a different venturi which is shown below:

The most important piece of this build was the ‘cone’ which is actually a floor drain fitting upside down. The Union can be glued to the cone. If I had to do this skimmer all over again I might have used a different container for the collection cup. Its lid doesn’t fasten tightly; it merely sits on over the top.

The reaction chamber was 6” PVC pipe with Uniseals for the input and output. I do like those Uniseals. The GenX-2400 seems like just the right pump for this size skimmer. Installing it as a recirc skimmer I suspect would improve its performance dramatically.

There really isn’t much to building one or more of these skimmers. All of the parts are relatively inexpensive. Only one aspect of this build that would require some degree of accuracy is the cutting of the 6” PVC for the reaction chamber. I used a table saw and made a jig to ensure a straight cut as I rotated the PVC pipe.

I don’t even think that Weldon is even necessary. I will likely just use clear PVC glue next time.

Here's an update for anyone interested in the 'Mesh Mod':
DIY Thread Wheel

Has been outperforming the needle wheel like you wouldn't believe. I still have some more info to add to that page, but it's an excellent DIY.

The skimmer design itself is not for 'reproduction for sale'. I do not mind if you use it for DIY purposes on your site.
