I want sea grass for a lagoon biotope tank with a haddoni or gigantea. If it exports any nutrients, I'll mark it as a bonus and call it a day.
I've pretty well thrown in the towel with regard to biological means of nutrient export. I'm kinda getting back to basics...
Skimmer, water changes, suppliments and enough liverock to attach cnidarians and provide hiding places for fish. I feel like everything else adds to the problem of nitrate and DOM.
I'm not saying plants don't help at all, but my current thinking is that they complicate matters by adding another tank to deal with or else they grow where you don't want them. For someone who likes to tinker that's fine but I'm getting sick of always having to rescue some component of the system from itself. I'm ready for another cut and dry system. My 210 was about as simple as it gets. BB, high flow, sump that's easy to syphon and big enough to do a WC without having to concern myself about major parameter fluctuations. I only had to put my hands in the tank to add stuff, frag stuff for other people or clean the glass. It was the best performing system I've ever had.
I miss that.
