A slew of "other species" breeding efforts

So, while I love that RareClownFish.com exists, I'm not gonna start duplicating my huge threads over here...just WAY too much work. But, it should be known that breeding the Onyx Percs, while I knew it was something that would eventually happen with our pair, it wasn't what I "set out" to do.

For those who are interested in all the other things I've tried to raise, here's the threads over on RC.

Apogon leptacanthus - "Threadfin, Bluestreak, Gl**** Longspine" Cardinalfish - made it to 45 days.
Reef Central Online Community - Apogon leptacanthus - Breeding Log

Synchiropus splendidus - The Green, Regular, "Classic" Mandarinfish - longest time to date is somewhere between 10-14 days - We have two pairs going and some insider info from a breeder in Germany. I WILL personally crack it stateside with no access to the sea..I only know of one other person who's done it!
Reef Central Online Community - Green Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) Breeding Log!

Synchiropus stellatus - The Red Scooter Blenny - 3 days and counting
Reef Central Online Community - Red Scooter Blenny / RSB (Synchiropus stellatus) Breeding Log!

Apogon margaritophorus / Pterapogon Kaudernii - "Lattice" Cardinalfish and the ubiquitous Bangaii Cardinalfish - aka the two species of Cardinals that I just can't get to hold their eggs! We ultimately lost our female margaritophorus due to egg binding so that's now a defunct project.
Reef Central Online Community - Mostly Apogon margaritophorus woes...

Elactinus multifasciatus - the Greenbanded Goby - made it to 18 days, currently working on another batch
Reef Central Online Community - Greenbanded Goby (Elacatinus multifasciatus, Gobidion etc..) Breeding Log

Priolepis hipoliti - the Rusty Goby - man these are going to be more difficult than Mandarins - basically barely get them past hatching.
Reef Central Online Community - Rusty Goby (Priolepis hipoliti) Breeding Log!

Centropyge loricula - The Flame Angelfish - formed our pair in a 24 cube, had some preliminary courtship, then the female mysteriously showed up dead just the other day.
Reef Central Online Community - Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula) Breeding Log?!

In addition to all that, we've of course had Cleaner Shrimp and Peppermint Shrimp hatches (haven't bothered). We've also had many egg ribbons from the Pacific Lettuce Nudibranch (Elyisa dimoedia) that got passed around to several folks who tried to raise them. And every once in a while we get a hatch of Dwarf Blue Legged Hermit Crabs...maybe someday I'll try them.

Also, some other "breeding attempts" that never made it onto their own threads - Firefish - had a nice well bonded pair in which one would disappear for weeks at a time. Ultimately that pair ended when one jumped. Same can be said for our Pearly Jawfish pair...I'm left with 1/2 of what I started. And Neon Gobies? Got a beautiful WC mated pair that instantly succumbed to ICH...only one pulled through. That's a project I'll probably try to resurrect at some point. I suspect once I nail down most the above I may put more efforts into these projects, but for now the mateless fish are still welcome additions in our tanks!

Top all that off with a 2m/1f group of adult Hippocampus barbouri that may or may not be having broods going unnoticed.

So that's what I have going on right now, "OTHER" than clownfish ;)

Feel free to ask anything here or on the threads over there.

Enjoy!

Matt

LOL, I actually FORGOT one species.

Ecsenius graveri - the Red Sea Mimic Blenny. We had two spawns. The pair got nasty towards each other and Renee blamed them for destroying some corals, so they were separated and ultimately re-paired in a friend's tank...the pair is currently doing quite well, is once again compatible in a SMALLER tank of all things, and probably spawning for him without him evening noticing!!

BTW, just to update this list.

Centropyge argi - routinely spawning my trio, almost nightly (but occasionally they skip one it seems). Can only get the larvae to survive 12-24 hours post hatch currently, but I'm working on extending that.
Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Centropyge argi Breeding Attempt (Log) - Take #2!

An update on Elactinus multifasciatus - I ended up bringing 20-30 through to saleable size and actually have 2 pairs of the offspring to start new breeding efforts down the line (the parents lived a total of maybe 2 years, which is technically "Double" their natural lifespan of a year, so I feel I really gave them everything I could :)

Amphiprion percula "Onyx" - I figured I might as well simply provide a link to my Onyx Perc threads, first the TOTM on RC, and my followup thread (after the laughable banning from RC for being a "commercial seller")
Reef Central Online Community - Amphiprion percula "Onxy" (Onyx Percula Clown) Breeding Log!
Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Amphiprion percula Onxy Clownfish Breeding Log - continued

I also have several other projects in the works, so who knows what I'll have to tag onto this list next!

FWIW,

Matt

Hey Matt! This is awesome stuff. Don't give up on the Onyx either. I'm sure they are 1000x easier than the angelfish stuff you are trying to do now. What kind of larval snagger are you using now? I don't use a snagger, but was curious.

Best,
Ilham

Just an update on my breeding list - FINALLY nailed species #3 a couple days ago.

So...an update on Pterapogon Kaudernii - I've now reared my first batch, artificially incubated from day 4. They were spawned on Jan 2nd, so they are now 25 days post spawn, and have been feeding for 3-4 days now. I'm going to try the next couple spawns that come out of my pairs to ensure that I have a PROVEN artificial incubation technique, instead of just getting luck after 2 years of trying on and off. FWIW, both my CB pair and my WC pair won't hold past about day 4, so for me, artificial incubation is the only way I'll have any more successes!

3 species reared successfully to the juvenile stage, including A. percula "Onyx", Elactinus multifacitatus, and Pterapogon kaudernii (here's the incubation setup that's worked once out of three attempts - Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Pterapogon kaudernii - Incubating Bangaii Cardinalfish Eggs

On another front:

Pseudochromis cyanotaenia - I just added this species to my list earlier this week. I was able over the course of 2 months (65 days) to get a 2 male pair to force the reversion of sex on one of the 2 back to FEMALE. We had egg production and a definite spawn, but I did not observe any hatch, so we don't know if the pair is yet fertile OR if the male is being a "good dad".
Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Pseudochromis cyanotaenia Breeding Log

FWIW,

Matt

The latest addition, just today (5-8-08)

Amphiprion ocellaris "Black / Darwin" - just had my first spawn...probably not going to amount to much being their first...we'll see! Marine Ornamental Fish & Invert Breeders :: View topic - Amphiprion ocellaris Darwin / Black breeding log for MWP
