Clownfish of the Day

Posted 10-27-2008 at 03:51 AM by schlecht13

Just thought I would have a little fun...since I keep so many pairs - I change favorites - well daily! I get so mesmerized by certain behaviors - today it was A. Nigripes. I keep a group of 9 that I purchased together - They all "share" (I put this in quotes b/c some are a little better at sharing than others :) a large Heteractis Magnifica - I have definitely picked out the dominant female but its very interesting watching the males try so hard to gain the #2 spot...I'll keep this post updated if its worth it - that is if anyone reads it!!

Noticed I was "Clownfish of the Day" on the left - Thanks Mark! So I thought I'd update on the Nigripes. The Anemone is growing - pretty large and the dominant female is easily 4" and gorgeous - much more pink and yellow. The dominant male I mentioned earlier last Oct has definitely become the dominant one...interesting though - it is as if he is "grooming" two other males to take his place. These are just my observations but 18 years of observing shows something ;) anyway..the grooming seemed to be confirmed when during the last time the female laid eggs, he actually seemed to be nudging the other male to fertilize. In terms of natural selection, this seems counter-intuitive - UNLESS the male is related to the two he is grooming - in this case he is liking "making sure" at least some of his genes get passed on...common in hire primate males actually. So thats the most recent update..more to come - btw - pics of the actual mating behvavior are next to impossible to obtain considering it is in the dark also - no I don't currently try to raise any fry - with this group, I am more interested in behvavior...Thanks for reading and more to come!
